Week 5: Wrapping Up Unit #1; Introduction to Unit #2
February 13, 2014I hope you’re all safe and warm today, enjoying one of Virginia Tech’s rare snow days! The storm definitely threw off our schedule, but we’ll try to get back on track during Week 5. Here’s a quick overview of our plans:
- On Monday, we’ll complete the peer critique exercise we had planned to do during Week 4. Please come to class with a complete draft of your Unit #1 site live on the web. We’ll also practice using some advance typography tools, so you should review Chapter 12 in Learning Web Design and the following resources before you come to class:
- “Web Design is 95% Typography,” by Oliver Reichenstein
- “Best Practices of Combining Typefaces,” by Douglas Bonneville
- The Elements of Typographic Style Applied to the Web
- Beautiful Web Type
- The Web Font Combinator
- Your Unit #1 project is due before you come to class on Wednesday. Please review the assignment details before you submit your project and don’t forget the final piece of the assignment: a one-page memo explaining and justifying the choices you made as worked on your site. In class, I will introduce Unit #2, the Website Modernization Project and we will take our first steps into the world of responsive web design. Before you come to class, please read Chapter 18 in Learning Web Design, and “Responsive Web Design: What It Is and How To Use It,” by Kayla Knight.
If you want to talk about any of these plans, just let me know. Otherwise, have a great weekend!
